The Conference will focus on the military concept and its changes, mainly in those European countries born in the wars of freedom and independence that followed the First World War.
This year, it will bring together Military Historians from Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, the Czech Republic, Poland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, the United States, and Estonia.
"The operational art, military thought, and officers and generals competent in military science are the most important prerequisites for the development of the military capabilities of any country, but as in any field, the invention of the bicycle would be costly in the field of warfare as well," said Hellar Lill, Director of the Estonian War Museum. "The military thought of the major European countries, which was tested in practice during the long years of the First World War, greatly influenced the education and training of the military of the new countries, as well as military planning. How exactly, it will be discussed at the Annual Baltic Military History Conference 2023."
The Conference's theme is derived from the Estonian Defence Academy's three-year research project, "Estonian Military Thought in 1920-1940", which ends next year and is funded by the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Estonia.
As part of the conference, the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Estonia and the Estonian War Museum will present the Hendrik Sepp Prize to the author of the best monograph and article on Estonian Military History published last year.
The Annual Baltic Military History Conference 2023 is organised by the Estonian War Museum, the Baltic Defence College and the Estonian Defence Academy. This year it is the 13th Annual Baltic Military History Conference of the Baltic Defence College and the 14th International Military History Conference of the Estonian War Museum - General Laidoner Museum.
The articles prepared based on the Conference presentations will be published in the Yearbook of Estonian Military History, which the Estonian War Museum publishes in cooperation with the Tallinn University Publishing House.
